 A message from the State Deputy

Brothers, I would like to spend a few moments reviewing some of January’s events.

On January 16th the Pro-life mass and rally took place in Montpelier. The day began with a Mass celebrated by his excellence Bishop Salvatore Matano. State Master Maurice Noel followed by twenty-five Sir knights led the procession. Also in attendance was a large number of knights. Following the Mass, there was a march to the State House and series of talks followed. This was a great demonstration of our support of our Bishop and the Pro-life movement. As a Knight we believe in the protection of life from conception to natural death. “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” (Jeremiah 1:5)

The month ended with the exemplification of the Second and Third Degree hosted by the Bishop Brady council #399. In all, we had 42 brother Knights from 20 Council make their Second and Third degrees. Also present were a large number of observers to support the candidates. It is a tribute to the size and quality of the facilities of council #399 that allowed for the exemplification of the degrees to be conducted in a dignified manner. I cannot give enough praise for the outstanding performance by our Third Degree team. Kudos to all involved.

We begin February with the celebration of World Marriage Day in our diocese on February 7. This celebration is a far cry from what we hear about marriage in the mass media.  There it tends to be the high national divorce rate, or which celebrities are married today followed by separated a week later etc., etc. Or, which states now allow same sex marriages. Even National Geographic has a lead article this month on polygamy. One may get the idea that married to the same partner for more than five years is an impossibly. We as Knights believe in the sanctity of marriage as a holy bond between one man and one woman. And, to prove that, I’ll give you a challenge. Find out how many of your brother knights or couples from your parish have been married for more than five years. Well, how about 10, or 20, or 30 or 50 years. Are we old fashion, or do we just follow an immutable moral code. Congratulation to all who will be celebrating significant anniversaries this year.

We begin the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday this year on February 17. Lent is a season of prayer and sacrifice in preparation for the Holy Triduum from Holy Thursday evening to Easter Sunday evening. When I was a youth the emphasis was on “What will I give up for Lent”. Now, I think more of what can I do to prepare myself spiritually for the passion and death of our Savior. When we became Knights, we made a promise made in the solitude of our hearts to pray the Rosary as often as possible. During Lent I ask you to renew that promise. The Joyful and Luminous Mysteries helps us to reflect on the life of Jesus, while the Sorrowful Mysteries are a great way to meditate on His passion and death.

One last item, As of January 31, we have received no nominations for the Anchor Award. If you have nominated someone in the past and they have not received the award it does not mean that they were not qualified for the award. Submit the nomination again. Also don’t forget your nominations for Family of the Year and Knight of the Year.

Vivat Jesus!

Vocations

Founded by a parish priest, Fr. Michael J. McGivney, the Knights of Columbus has always worked hard to encourage young men and women to consider God’s call to service in the priesthood or religious life.

Under the motto "Keep the Faith Alive," the Order’s vocations initiative has a number of programs based on prayer and designed to reach the hearts and minds of young people, as well as to provide financial support during their years of seminary training or religious formation.

In addition to supporting seminarians and postulants through the Order’s RSVP Program, councils, assemblies and circles are encouraged to conduct programs and activities that promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The following vocations materials are available from the Supreme Council.

A message from the State Master

Worthy Sir Knights and Brother Knights:

I would like to apologize for the long delay in between my monthly newsletter to you all.  I really don’t have too many excuses for it other than that I am quite busy with many duties and when it’s time to do this newsletter, It’s too late, but I will try to bring you up to date on the things that are happening in the Vermont District of the Fourth Degree.

Since my last newsletter we have had a very successful Fourth Degree exemplification in Rutland with 44 Brother Knights receiving the honors of Sir Knights. I would to thank the Rutland Assembly and Faithful Navigator Jim Candon for all the help and hard work that they did in making this a very successful degree.  I would especially like to thank my District Degree team on doing an exceptional job at this degree because it was the first time doing the “NEW DEGREE”. With the presence of our Vice Supreme Master, who always critiques these degrees, His report was very positive.

I would also at this time like to thank all the Sir Knights that have participated in the many events in either the local parishes and for being there when Bishop Matano has asked us to attend. Our presence is always very much appreciated by Bishop Matano as he is well aware of all of the good work that the Knights of Columbus do in the Diocese of Burlington.

The next four to five months will be very busy for us as Sir Knight’s starting in March.  I have scheduled our Bi-annual District Meeting to be held on March 27, 2010 at the Barre council hall.  In the Vermont District, All Assemblies are entitled to the Faithful Navigator and 1 delegate.

At this meeting we will review what we have done, look at new resolutions to be voted on, and also seek nominations for candidates to take over District Master for the following two years.

There are a few more things that I need to do in the upcoming months.  I am looking for an Assembly in the southern part of the state to host a fourth degree exemplification in late May.  I will be making a few phone calls to some of you in hopes that you are willing and able to host this degree.  I will also be scheduling a Color Corp certification for all Sir Knight’s in the state.  I will be asking all of the Faithful Navigators and their Color Corp Commanders to attend this session so that I can certify them and in turn they can go back to their assemblies and certify their Color Corp.  These certifications are important for all the times we are in regalia at Funerals, Confirmations, Marching in parades. Doing it right and together is always important.

We should always be looking to do events in our community that shows that we are a Patriotic Degree. I ask that the Faithful Navigators take a good look at your Assembly to see what you have done in the past 6 months you that would qualify you for any civic awards and the “Be a Patriot award”. These applications are due by June 1st. I look forward to reviewing and judging these awards.

As we look forward to the next few months, I ask that we take a good look at all of our members in your Councils and encourage them to make their Fourth Degree because when a member makes his Fourth Degree and becomes a Sir Knight, He is a Knight forever.

Vivat Jesus

6th annual

K of C “300 Club”

Brother Knights;

I have been hearing from different areas in the state that there is still some confusion as to what the main purpose of the “300 Club” is. I will try to explain it.

When I proposed this event 6 years ago at the State convention I stated that the whole purpose is to find a way to raise some money to help pay some of the expenses of the Delegates to the annual State Convention. The per deum & mileage at the time and still is only $15.00 a day and I believe $.18 per mile. With the rooms & meals that keep increasing every year, some Council’s have a hard time sending delegates to attend. The “300 Club” has helped this in paying the attending delegates, Chairman an average of at least $50.00 per day for attending. This year’s ticket sales again fell short of our goal but the payout will still be very helpful to the Delegates. I will be giving a full report at the convention and will be keeping you updated monthly as to who the winners are.

Guide lines: Sell 300 tickets at a price of $50.00 per ticket. We would have a weekly drawing for 19 weeks and have three cash prizes as follows:

1st prize - $100.00

2nd prize - $75.00

3rd prize - $50.00

 On the 20th week (or State convention) we have Grand prizes of:

1st - $1000.00

2nd - $500.00

3rd - $275.00

These are the winners for the first 6 weeks;
